A local media brand lives or dies on how fast it can publish and how easily readers can find what is relevant to them. Optimum Technology built JOHORNOW a bilingual content platform on our own CMS, sized for a newsroom that ships several posts a day across eighteen categories.

About JOHORNOW

JOHORNOW (就在柔佛) is Johor's largest local media platform — a guide to eating, playing and living in the state, covering food, travel, news, deals, property, education and more. It reaches 180,000 local readers every month and positions itself to merchants as the way to get 500,000 Johoreans to know your business. The editorial voice is primarily Chinese, with an English edition alongside it, matching how its audience in Johor Bahru actually reads.

What we built

The platform is built on Optimum CMS rather than WordPress, because a publication at this cadence needs the backend to stay out of the way. The pieces that matter are the ones a newsroom touches daily.

Eighteen categories, with subcategories
Food, news, travel, deals, events, education, property, beauty, weddings, fashion, lifestyle, automotive, health, career, motivation, tech, pets and music — each with its own landing page
Bilingual by design
A full Chinese and English edition, switchable from every page rather than bolted on as a translation plugin
Map-based discovery
Browse Johor by map with a distance radius, so a reader can find what is near them rather than only what is newest
Flat, keyword-rich article URLs
Every post sits at the root on a descriptive slug instead of a dated archive path — built for search from the start
Instant search
Keyboard-first search across articles, food and places, with per-article view counts surfaced to editors and readers
Merchant and contributor flows
A partnership track for businesses that want reach, and a submission path for contributed articles

The outcome

The structural decision that carries the most weight here is discovery. A media site with eighteen categories and several posts a day fails quietly if readers can only see the newest thing — so the same content is reachable by category, by map, by search, and by language, and each of those paths is a real page a search engine can index. That is what turns a publication into a platform a merchant will pay to be featured on.

This is the kind of content-platform build our website design service delivers when a brochure site is not the answer. You can see it at the JOHORNOW website.
