Ask three companies in Malaysia for an SEO quotation and the proposals may look surprisingly similar. One offers 20 keywords and monthly reports, another promises technical SEO and content, while a third adds terms like “AI SEO” and “authority building”.
The problem is that none of those phrases tells you how much useful work is actually happening. If you are comparing SEO services in Malaysia, a better question is not “How many keywords do I get?” but “What is actually being done to improve my search visibility?”
What Should an SEO Service Actually Cover?
SEO is not one job. A website may have technical problems, weak service pages, poor local visibility, the wrong keywords or content that does not match what customers are searching for.
A useful SEO service should first identify which of those problems actually exist instead of immediately publishing more articles. In practice, the work normally falls into a few areas.
- Search research — finding what potential customers actually search, how competitive those searches are and whether the keyword can realistically lead to business.
- Technical SEO — checking indexing, crawlability, broken links, page speed, mobile usability, sitemap structure and other issues that may stop Google from using the site properly.
- On-page SEO — improving existing pages, headings, search intent, internal links, trust signals and calls to action.
- Content SEO — creating new pages only when there is a genuine search opportunity.
- Local SEO — improving Google Business Profile, Maps visibility, local relevance and other signals for businesses that depend on nearby customers.
What Are You Actually Paying For?
| What a package may advertise | What actually matters | |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | 20, 50 or 100 keywords | Search demand, intent and business value |
| Technical SEO | Monthly audit report | Problems are identified and actually fixed |
| Content | 4 articles every month | Content exists because there is a real search opportunity |
| Backlinks | 30 links per month | Relevant and trustworthy mentions |
| Reporting | Ranking charts | Data that helps decide what to improve next |
What Should Happen Every Month?
A monthly SEO retainer should represent ongoing work, not simply a report being generated. Depending on the website, a typical month may include reviewing rankings and search queries, fixing technical issues, improving existing landing pages, researching new content opportunities, publishing or updating content, building internal links and improving local visibility.
The important part is that the next step should respond to real data. SEO should not be a 12-month checklist created on Day 1 and followed no matter what happens. Google Search Console, rankings and actual search behaviour should influence what gets worked on next.
More Keywords Do Not Automatically Mean Better SEO
SEO packages are often sold using numbers because numbers are easy to compare: 20 keywords, 50 keywords, 100 keywords. But a hundred keywords are useless if most of them have little search demand or no commercial value.
The same applies to articles and backlinks. “Four articles every month” sounds productive, but if only two topics are worth writing this month, forcing another two into the schedule may simply create weak content. “Thirty backlinks” also means very little without knowing where those links come from.
The deliverable should support the strategy. The strategy should not exist just to justify the deliverable.
Technical SEO Should Include More Than an Audit
One thing worth checking before hiring an SEO provider is who actually fixes technical problems. An audit may tell you that the website has indexing issues, slow pages, broken internal links or incorrect canonical tags, but that report alone does not improve anything.
Some SEO companies provide recommendations and expect another developer to implement them. Others include implementation as part of the work. That difference matters when comparing two quotations.
Ask directly:
“If you find a technical problem, who fixes it?”
That one question can explain a large difference between two SEO packages.
Content Should Support the Pages That Make Money
A Blog should not become a collection of unrelated articles. For example, an SEO pricing article should naturally support an SEO service page. A local SEO article may connect to a guide about choosing an SEO company.
Over time, those pages form a clear topic cluster rather than sitting separately. Internal links help Google understand which pages belong together, but they also help readers move from researching a problem to considering a service.
That is why content strategy matters more than simply publishing frequently.
Not sure what your website actually needs?
Start with the website and the search data first. A useful SEO plan should be based on what is actually limiting visibility, not on a fixed package of keywords and articles.

Search is no longer limited to the traditional Google results page. Users increasingly research products, companies and services through Google AI features, ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI tools.
That does not mean traditional SEO is disappearing. The same foundations still matter: clear information, crawlable pages, useful content, strong site structure and factual detail.
The difference is that vague marketing copy becomes even less useful. A sentence like “We provide innovative and high-quality solutions” gives both customers and AI systems very little usable information.
A page that clearly explains what the service includes, who it is for, how the process works and what its limitations are is much easier to understand.
What Should You Ask an SEO Company?
You do not need to understand every SEO term before speaking to an agency. Ask questions that make the work specific.
- What would you fix first on our current website?
- Why did you choose these keywords?
- Who implements technical changes?
- How do you decide which content to create?
- What happens if the original strategy does not work?
- What will the monthly report help us decide?
If the answers are specific to your website, that is useful. If the answer is mainly “We will optimise 50 keywords and write four blogs every month,” you still do not know very much.
When SEO May Not Be the First Thing You Need
SEO is not always the first investment a business should make. If the website is confusing, has weak service information or makes it difficult for visitors to contact the company, increasing traffic may simply send more people into a poor sales experience.
A new business that needs leads next week may also need advertising or direct outreach before SEO has enough time to build visibility. Sometimes the right first step is simply:
Fix the website first.
The Bottom Line
When comparing SEO services in Malaysia, do not judge the package only by the number of keywords, articles, backlinks or reports. Those are outputs.
Look at the work underneath them. A useful SEO service should be able to explain what customers are searching for, what is preventing the website from performing, which pages need improvement and how actual search data will influence what happens next.
If those answers are clear, the monthly deliverables start to make sense. If they are not, a bigger keyword count will not fix the problem.
