A customer in Johor Bahru searches:
“aircond service near me”
Another searches:
“pilates studio johor bahru”
A third person searches for exactly the same service from the other side of town and sees a different set of businesses.
That is local SEO.
If your business depends on customers from a particular town, neighbourhood or service area, ranking nationally is not always the first battle. You need Google to understand what you do, where you operate and whether your business is a relevant result for someone nearby.
And unlike normal organic SEO, there is one factor you cannot optimise away completely: distance.
How Google Decides Local Rankings
| Factor | What It Means | What You Can Do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your business matches the search | Use accurate categories, services and clear website content |
| Distance | How far the business is from the searcher | Keep your real location and service area accurate |
| Prominence | How established and well-known the business appears | Build reviews, links, mentions and a stronger online presence |
Google officially describes local ranking using these three main ideas: relevance, distance and prominence.
This is important because local SEO is not simply about repeating “Johor Bahru” fifty times on a page. You are trying to give Google enough reliable information to understand the business and match it to the right local search.
Start With Google Business Profile
For most local businesses, Google Business Profile is one of the first places to fix.
Your Business Profile can show your address or service area, opening hours, phone number, website, business category, photos and customer reviews directly in Google Search and Maps.
The basic information should be complete and accurate. Google itself says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to appear in relevant local results.
At minimum, check:
- Business name — use the real-world name of the company.
- Primary category — choose the most specific category that describes the core business.
- Additional categories — add them only when they genuinely describe services you offer.
- Address or service area — make sure it reflects how the business actually operates.
- Opening hours — including special hours when relevant.
- Phone and website — both should lead directly to the business.
One thing we would not recommend is adding keywords into the Business Profile name just because they are valuable for SEO.
If the real business name is “ABC Dental”, changing it to:
ABC Dental | Best Dentist Johor Bahru | Teeth Whitening JB
is not clever optimisation. Google's guidelines say the profile name should reflect the business's real-world name, and unnecessary additions can cause problems with the listing.
Your Business Category Matters More Than Most Businesses Realise
A Google Business Profile category is not just a label shown to customers. It helps Google understand what kind of searches the business should appear for.
A Pilates studio should not choose “Gym” just because that keyword gets more searches if Pilates Studio is a more accurate primary category. Likewise, a web development company should not add unrelated categories simply to appear for more searches.
Google recommends using as few categories as possible while choosing options that are specific and genuinely represent the business.
Independent local SEO research also continues to identify the primary Google Business Profile category as one of the strongest factors associated with Local Pack visibility. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Reviews Are More Than Social Proof
Reviews obviously affect whether a customer trusts a business, but they also matter to local visibility.
Google states that having more reviews and positive ratings can help a business's local ranking. Reviews also give potential customers information that a company cannot write about itself: whether the service was responsive, whether the experience was good and whether people would return.
The goal should not be to suddenly collect fifty reviews in one week and then stop for a year. A healthier process is to ask real customers for feedback consistently after a completed service or positive experience.
Respond to them too. A useful response does not need to contain awkward SEO keywords; it should simply show that somebody is paying attention.
Google Maps SEO Is Not Only About Google Maps
This is the part many businesses miss.
Google Business Profile does not exist separately from the rest of your online presence. Google can also use information from your official website and other publicly available sources when building local business information. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
Your website should clearly explain:
- what services you provide,
- where the business is located or operates,
- how customers can contact you,
- and why individual services deserve their own useful pages.
For example, a company trying to rank for several services in Johor Bahru may perform better with useful individual service pages rather than one page containing five lines about everything the company does.
This is still SEO. If you want the wider picture of what an ongoing campaign normally includes, our guide to SEO Services in Malaysia breaks down technical SEO, content, local search and measurement in more detail.
Do You Need a Page for Every Town?
Sometimes.
A company genuinely serving Johor Bahru, Kulai and Iskandar Puteri may have a reason to create location-specific content if the services, customers or information for those areas are meaningfully different.
But creating thirty nearly identical pages such as:
SEO Company Johor Bahru
SEO Company Skudai
SEO Company Permas Jaya
SEO Company Mount Austin
and changing only the place name is not a strong local SEO strategy.
A location page should exist because there is something useful to say about serving that location — not because a spreadsheet contains another town keyword.
Already paying for SEO but still invisible locally?
Local visibility may require different work from a national SEO campaign. Check the Business Profile, local competition, service pages and search data before simply publishing more blogs.
Explore Our SEO Services → Google Maps · Local SEO · Technical SEO · ContentThe Part You Cannot Control: Distance
This is where unrealistic local SEO promises usually fall apart.
If your business is in Mount Austin and somebody searches from Bukit Indah, Google may decide that another relevant business much closer to the searcher is a better result.
That does not necessarily mean your SEO has failed.
Google explicitly uses distance as part of local ranking. The results can therefore change depending on where the search happens.
This is why screenshots showing a business at “No.1 on Google Maps” are incomplete without knowing:
- which keyword was searched,
- where the searcher was located,
- and whether the result was personalised.
A useful Local SEO campaign should measure visibility across relevant areas instead of pretending one ranking position applies to an entire city.
How Do You Build Local Prominence?
Prominence is partly about how established the business appears across the web.
Google mentions factors such as links to the business and reviews when describing prominence. In practice, this means a local business benefits when other relevant websites, publications, directories, associations or community sources genuinely mention it.
For a Malaysian SME, that could include a supplier website, industry association, local news story, mall directory, event partner or other legitimate local reference.
This is very different from buying hundreds of random directory links.
Local authority should look like something a real business would naturally build.
Keep Your Business Information Consistent
If the Website says one address, Google Business Profile says another and an old directory still shows a phone number from five years ago, both customers and search engines receive conflicting information.
Your main business details should stay consistent across the places that matter:
Name → Address → Phone → Website
This is often called NAP consistency in local SEO.
You do not need to spend every week creating hundreds of new directory listings. Start by making sure the important profiles customers actually find are accurate.
What About Photos and Google Posts?
Keep the profile active and useful, but do not confuse every Google Business Profile feature with a direct ranking trick.
Google recommends adding photos and videos because they help customers understand the business. Updated photos, accurate information and useful profile content can also make a listing more convincing when somebody is deciding where to click.
Third-party local SEO research, however, suggests that simply publishing large numbers of Google Posts or stuffing keywords into descriptions is not among the strongest direct ranking factors.
Use these features because they improve the profile for customers.
Not because somebody promised that ten Posts would move you three positions overnight. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}
How Much Should Local SEO Cost?
That depends on whether the business only needs a Google Business Profile cleaned up or an ongoing campaign that also involves website optimisation, service pages, reviews, citations, technical fixes and content.
This is why a RM500 local optimisation task and a RM3,000 monthly SEO campaign should not automatically be compared as though they are the same service.
If you are currently comparing quotations, our guide to SEO Price in Malaysia: RM500 vs RM5,000 explains what usually changes as the scope and budget increase.
A Practical Local SEO Checklist
If we were reviewing a Malaysian local business from zero, this is where we would start:
- Verify the Google Business Profile.
- Confirm the correct primary business category.
- Complete the real address or service area, hours, phone and website.
- Make sure important services are properly explained on the website.
- Check that contact and location information is consistent.
- Build a steady process for collecting genuine customer reviews.
- Respond to reviews and keep the profile useful for customers.
- Build genuine local and industry mentions over time.
- Track local visibility from more than one point in the town.
- Use the results to decide what needs improving next.
Notice what is not on that list:
“Repeat Johor Bahru everywhere until Google gives us No.1.”
The Bottom Line
Local SEO in Malaysia is not just about creating a Google Business Profile and waiting for enquiries.
Google needs to understand what the business does, where it operates and how relevant and established it is compared with other businesses around the searcher.
You can improve relevance through accurate categories, service information and useful website content. You can build prominence through reviews, links and genuine local visibility.
But you cannot move your physical location closer to every person searching.
That is why the useful goal is not:
“Rank No.1 everywhere in Johor Bahru.”
It is:
“Become one of the strongest and most relevant local options where our real customers are searching.”
